Daily Quote and Reflection:Duck Dynasty Patriarch’s Belief System about Gays and Black Experience

Daily Quote:  “My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.” Phil Robertson, Patriarch of Duck Dynasty

Reflection: In the January issue of GQ magazine, the “Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson went over the top in his ignorant and disrespectful comments about gays as “sinners akin to adulterers and swindlers”. In addition, he said growing up in Louisiana before the Civil Rights Movement, he never saw any mistreatment of blacks…or any one singing the blues. In his attempt to recover he made the following statement yesterday: “My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other”.

I am sure that most people would find the above statement an acceptable path for living  their lives but the problem is that he seems to have a major miss alignment between this quoted philosophy and his espoused beliefs and the spew he verbalized in the GQ article. The question becomes which one does he truly believe and life his life by?  For his blunder and openness in spewing ignorance about his true beliefs, A&E cable channel put him on a “hiatus” for the time being. The A&E reality series is a “goldmine” for the A&E cable channel, so it will be interesting to see what they do in the long-term. Will the money rule or will they attempt to just distance the network from these stupid remarks and ride out the storm for three to six months?

Hopefully the advertisers for the show and fans (8 million viewers) will see these hateful anti-gay and dismiss comments on blacks as unacceptable and will choose to view other programs in the future. This type of action will send a clear message that this type of Neanderthal thinking and dogmatic value system is not acceptable as part of the teaching of Jesus nor does it speak to the love for humanity and respecting difference as a core American value.

Final Thought: It is a sign of creeping cultural and inner death when we no longer can praise or see the humanity and good in others and only spew hatred for gays and blacks.
